The transition from the spring lettuces and Asian greens in the greenhouses to the summer crops of eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, basil and tomatillo is now complete! A task accomplished with the help of lots of busy volunteers. We are already harvesting the basil regularly sending pounds to the Community Kitchens to be turned into pesto for use when summer is over.
A sure sign of summer is the buzzing of the bees in the lavender. Always a favourite task and a summer pleasure is cutting and hanging the flowers to dry.
New Volunteers Enjoying a New Experience
Every summer we see a surge in student volunteers coming to help at The Sharing Farm.
We welcome their youthful enthusiasm and energy. They seem to enjoy the physical activities out in the summer sunshine. Here are the three new summer volunteers who harvested Napa cabbage for the Food Bank.
The Healing Garden
We have been working hard in the gardens, weeding and planting in flowering annuals all in readiness for the many visitors that will be coming on August 24th, 10:00am – 3:00pm for the 6th Annual Garlic Festival .
The Herb Garden
We timed the herb harvest perfectly this year, cutting the different types of herbs at their peak and sending them to the Community Kitchen for use in their meals. We also replanted the boxes of thyme that succumbed to last year’s winter and added a box of summer savory, still to be harvested. This Monday will be the time to harvest the mint.
The Monday Active Seniors Program
Seniors have been enjoying the convenience of our shuttle bus service. The bus waits in front of the Brighouse Library Drop Box (Minoru Blvd.) between 9:30 – 9:45 every Monday morning and drops them back at 1:00. Each volunteer is discovering their niche … Jun prefers the labour of shoveling manure and preparing the rows for planting and Mercia, Shirley and Rose enjoy harvesting basil and planting seedlings. Our snack break at 12:30 rings with stories and laughter.
Greenhouse Volunteer Days and Times
The Sharing Farm Greenhouse Volunteers meet every Monday and Thursday (except Public Holidays) from 10:00 – 2:00. Everyone Welcome!
