Notes from the Sharing Farm Field

Drop-in Saturday Volunteering starts this week. Volunteer hours are from 10am-2pm every Saturday through the summer (excluding holiday weekends).

So everyone’s familiar with Reading Week, right? Well this week at The Sharing Farm will henceforth be known as “Weeding Week”. Not quite the same, but it has a nice ring to it I think!

This is a golden opportunity to become intimately familiar with various plants that We Don’t Want Growing In Our Fields. If you are handy with a weedwacker, or would like to become so, golden opportunity.

We have our seed potatoes now that were bought from W & A Farm in East Richmond. They are the biggest potato growers in Richmond and supply a lot of seed to the region. This week we will be “chitting” them, which means pre-sprouting. The soil has drained enough to be plowing and tilling in various areas, but the weeding takes precedent. I’d like to get as much of the weeds gone to seed out before hand so’s not to plow a huge seed bank into the soil. Same goes for the perennial weeds’ roots. We also have a bit of a lull in terms of seeding this week. So without further ado…

Welcome to Weeding Week!
